Floating Market | Willemstad, Curacao

A scenic view of small wooden ships loaded with fruits and vegetables parked end-to-end greets you at the banks of Waaigat bay.  This hundred-year-old marketplace is called Willemstad’s Floating Market and its origin story came from an inventive solution: since Curacao’s arid climate isn’t conducive to growing fruits or fields of vegetables, produces here are sold from nearby Venezuela. The market itself doesn’t float – each of the vendors’ stands are set up on the solid ground in front of their boats.
